He is the founding president of the Caucus (Association) of Black Sociologists; a current member of the ASA Council; a former president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and the Eastern Sociological Society. One of his major books is:The Black Community: Diversity and Unity.

This paper is a revision of one that was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, held in 1991 in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am indebted to William D’antonio, William Martineau and Lionel Maldonado for the material provided from the ASA files.

This author is professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and new resides in New Orleans.
