Christ came to the world to solve the problems that existed in his epoch. Mohammed likewise came to solve the problems that existed. I would not come to preach communism or fascism. I would not enter power with a book in my hand to preach what Marx preached, what Engels preached, what St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Augustine preached. No, señor. I would not go to attack the fascists or the communists armed with a club. We all would have the right to think, to act. 1 would go to power, señor, to solve problems. —Asaad Bucaram (Nueva, February–March, 1977:40)
