Pattern indifference: The response of pay setters to the 1993 GM-UAW settlement

Abstract

Prominent union wage settlements are sometimes thought to have a pattern-setting influence on the economy as a whole. However, a telephone survey after the GM-UAW settlement in the fall of 1993 reveals widespread ignorance of the settlement on the part of wage setters. Such ignorance suggests that big union settlements do not have direct spillover effects outside their immediate industries.
