Abstract
Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated altered surface topography of peripheral erythrocytes in patients with nonpsychotic mental diseases, nonmetabolic mental retardation, and paranoid schizophrenia. Maximum decrease in the number of bioconcave diskocytes and acculation of transitional, prehemolytic, and degenerative forms of erythrocytes were found in schizophrenia.
