Abstract
We calculate the penetration of the electric field associated with the tropospheric line of squalls into the ionosphere and its influence on the nighttime midlatitude E-region. We obtained that the electric field can reach 3 mV m−1 at ionospheric heights. The electron density in the upper E-layer, influenced by this field, decreases as low as 3.5 times from the undisturbed level. The horizontal scale of the disturbed ionospheric volume is about 200–270 km.
