Abstract
We analyze attenuation of a plane electromagnetic wave by a homogeneous spherical particle in absorbing medium. Relations between the values of imaginary and real parts of the complex refractive index of the medium, which result in negative values of attenuation in the Rayleigh approximation, are obtained for the particular case of a nonabsorbing spherical cavity in a medium with absorption. We given an example of negative attenuation due to small air bubbles in water in the range of centimeter waves.
