Compaction and elastic relaxation of fullerite powder

Abstract

Structural changes are considered that arise during loading of fullerite powder under free settlement conditions at room temperature. The shear modulus is evaluated and the relaxation of elastic distortion is demonstrated. Considerable residual distortion during compaction of fullerite and a decrease in lattice parameter are caused by residual macrostresses that reach 850 MPa. Disintegration of a fullerite compact into powder leads to the total removal of macrostresses and consequently the disappearance of the corresponding lattice deformation. This indicates the elastic reversibility of deformation for fullerite under pressure.
