Summary
This is an excellent research laboratory for work in an important aspect of plant molecular biology. Generous fellowships, including travel funds for families, are available throughout the Science and Technology Agency; information in the United States is available from the National Science foundation. I can personally testify that living conditions at RIKEN are excellent, that the Japanese language is manageable with a little effort, that Japanese food is delicious, and that the people are gracious and helpful to foreign visitors. Of course, prices are extremely high by United States standards, but the RIKEN stipends are sufficiently generous to overcome even that difficulty.
