Editor’s Note. A paper by Li et al. (1991) in describing anin-situ molecular assay for auxin struck me as having exceptional historic significance. They concluded that their system” … provides a more accurate assessment of relative changes in auxin concentrations that occur during tropisms and other auxin-induced growth responses than assessments based on bioassay or analytical procedures…” and further that”… our results suggest that an asymmetric distribution of auxin develops prior to and during phototropism and gravitropism… [and thus] … support the Cholodny-Went theory…” I thought that the perspectives of a veteran auxinologist might be useful, and asked for a commentary from K. V. Thimann, the coauthor with Frits Went ofPhytohormones (1937).
