Abstract
Gross and histological changes in simultaneously resected mitral and aortic valves in patients with rheumatic heart disease are described. All the mitral valves showed characteristic postinflammatory changes. However, 14 per cent of the resected aortic valves did not show features indicative of postinflammatory pathology and were considered to be only haemodynamically altered valves. Myxoid change seen in these valves was at times indistin-guishable from that seen in primary myxoid change in the valves. Our findings indicate that histological features in rheumatic involvement of the valve although suggestive are not diagnostic. Critical gross examination along with histological features will give aetiological diagnosis in most of the cases.
