Abstract
During an earlier series of measurements of the heat capacities of alloys in the central portion of the Fe-Th system, results were obtained that raised questions as to the temperature ranges of stability of the intermediate phases, Fe7Th2 and Fe3Th. A supplementary investigation was therefore undertaken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to clarify the situation. The results indicate that the peritectic reaction at 1200 °C involves Fe7Th2 rather than Fe3Th and that there is a cascading series of peritectic reactions between the congruent melting of Fe17Tl2 at 1462 °C and the eutectic reaction at 875 °C.
