Transformation-induced microstructures in cobalt-iron alloys

Abstract

Transformation-induced microstructures in Co-Fe alloys have been evaluated by trans-mission electron microscopy. It appears that macroscopic HCP regions evolve by the ag-glomeration of overlapping faults and four-or six-layer HCP nuclei located at different levels within a deformed region. The observed debris within well-developed HCP platelets and the presence of twins in transformed material are consistent with the preceding con-cept. Furthermore, based on these results it may be argued convincingly that the role of stair rod-cross slip in the transformation is very minor.
