Conclusions
-
1.
The NaX and NaY zeolites are effective carriers for an Rh catalyst for the carbonylation of methanol to form methyl acetate at 200–250° and at atmospheric pressure. The cation exchange catalysts are more active and selective than the impregnated catalysts.
-
2.
Preliminary treatment of the catalysts with air or N2 does not decrease its activity. Reduction with H2 deactivates the catalysts.
-
3.
The addition of (C2H5)3N into the reaction zone greatly inhibits the carbonylation. The addition of H2O accelerates it somewhat and (CH3CO)2O and CH3COOH inhibit both the carbonylation and the dehydration of the methanol. The alkyl iodide is a component of the reaction which is regenerated at the end of the catalytic cycle.
