Summary

There has been enormous progress in treating coronary artery disease during the last 2 decades. The development of coronary surgery in Austria was certainly encouraged whenJ. Navratil was Head of the II. Surgical Department in Vienna. Since then, the number of patients undergoing coronary artery surgery has increased tremendously due to the success of its surgical techniques. Today we are confronted with the developments of surgical techniques and structural changes of the patient population as well as questions of logistics and health policy. Analyzing and putting into practice these issues from a scientific as well as from an organizational point of view is going to be the challenge in the near future.
