Abstract
The use of simple processing schemes to modify the interface in molybdenum-reinforced NiAl is described. Initial studies revealed that at high temperatures, intermediate barrier layers are required to prevent interdiffusion between NiAl and molybdenum. Two different processing schemes to produce interface layers of Mo2C are described. It is shown that Mo2C can be formed by alloying NiAl with small additions of carbon or by carburizing molybdenum externally to form a layer of Mo2C on the surface prior to bonding it with NiAl. The advantages, disadvantages, and generality of these approaches are presented.
