Abstract
The formation of the surface layer of carbides by chromizing carbon steels has been ex-amined using a molten salt technique. The carbide layer was analyzed with a micro-probe and examined metallographically after etching. The results were interpreted by means of the Fe-Cr-C equilibrium phase diagram assuming that local equilibrium is es-tablished at all the phase boundaries.
