Abstract
The martensites which form fromβ AuCd alloys have been studied by X-ray diffraction using both powder and single-crystal techniques. Alloys containing 46.8 to 51.0 at. pct Cd were examined. Besides the parent phaseβ only two other phases were observed:β′ andβ“. A new unit cell is proposed for β” which has 18 atoms and trigonal-hexagonal point symmetry. All previous 0“ crystal structure proposals are reviewed critically. The relationship of theβ” crystal structure to the β-to-β“martensitic transition is discussed.
