Oxidation induced bending of metal foils

Metallurgical transactions Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

An explanation is given of the observation that bent metal foils undergo further bending when subjected to oxidation. Experiments carried out on nickel foils show that the effect depends on foil thickness, initial angle of bend, and temperature. The results are in agreement with the predictions of a model based on a conformational misfit generated at the metal-metal oxide interface during oxidation.
