Abstract
Zero flux planes have been observed in many multicomponent diffusion couples following interdiffusion. Recently, it was shown with a constant diffusivity theory that their occurrence can be predicted by knowing the terminal alloy compositions and the square root diffusivity. In the present work, the theory is tested by applying it to previous obervations on the Cu-Ni-Zn system and it is found to predict correctly the occurrence of zero flux planes in 21 out of 24 concentration profiles. Also, a qualitative discussion is given of how variations in diffusivity with composition can modify the constant diffusivity predictions.
