Abstract
The rate of carburization of iron strips in 50 pct CO-50 pct (H2 + H2O) or (H2 + H2S) atmospheres containing from 0.17 to 1.44 pct H2O or 0.025 to 0.40 pct H2S at 1273 K has been measured. The presence of H2O or H2S reduces the rate significantly and the species adsorbed on the surface of iron retarding the rates are oxygen and sulfur. For example, 0.2 pct H2O reduces the rate by about a factor of two and 0.2 pct H2S reduces the rate by about a factor of ten. The rate equations and the usual approximations used to describe the thermodynamics of surfaces are discussed.
