Summary

Since geological information for urban planning is not readily available in Queensland, a pilot study has been carried out in part of the most populated southeast of the State to define parameters for systematic mapping at the reconnaissance scale. The evaluation of land for urban use is based on capability ratings which consider slope, landslide frequency, flooding, and regolith properties, the latter with regard to foundation potential and domestic effluent absorption. These physical constraints are combined with inventories of extractive materials, groundwater protection areas, and educational geological features into a sieve map of potential urban land suitability.
