Summary
Gravels of the floor of the southern North Sea can be subdivided into four groups according to grain size, composition and roundness. The first gravel type consists of fluvial pebbles deposited by Pleistocene rivers between the south-east coast of Britain and the coast of Belgium. The main components of the gravel are flint, limestone and sandstone & quartzite.
The second type occurs between the east coast of Britain and the Dogger Bank. This gravel chiefly contains sandstone & quartzite, limestone and porphyries. The gravel forms a lag deposit from boulder clays and fluvio-glacial outwash deposits from the Weichsel Glaciation. The third gravel type is found off the West Frisian Islands. The main components of the gravel are flint, granite and sandstone & quartzite. The gravel originates from eroded boulder clay of the Saale Glaciation.
The fourth type has been collected NW of Heligoland. The main components are granite, limestone and flint. Probably the fluvio-glacial deposits of the Weichsel Glaciation form the source of this gravel.
