Usage of geological maps for civil engineering purposes in quaternary and holocene areas

Summary

The present geological mapping of the Geological Survey of The Netherlands is highly intended to serve for engineering technical purposes such as civil engineering technics, hydrology, agricultural engineering technics and environmental planning in general.

This means in the first place a legend which permits to include relevant technical information in the map without disturbing the imagination of the geological genesis of the area.

Besides the legendary problems a relevant choice of the additional single value maps may enlarge the applicability of the geological map. Finally, the three-dimensional information is accomplished by numerous profiles from which technical information can be derived.

However, the user of the maps has to realize that some efforts have to be made to translate geologically classified units into terms of technical application. Specifications and restrictions in this respect are to be taken from the explanatory book which belongs to the complete set of maps.

Les activités actuelles de cartographie géologique du Service Géologique de l’Etat aux Pays-Bas ont l’intention d’être utile pour les buts de l’ingénieur en génie civil, hydrologie, génie rural et l’environment. Cela implique en premier lieu une légende qui permet l’inclusion d’informations d’importance technique sans que la présentation de la genèse géologique du territoire soit troublée. Un choix justifié des cartes adjointes d’un seul aspect pourra élargir l’application de la carte géologique. L’information tridimensionelle est finalement accomplie par de profils nombreux dont on peut obtenir d’informations techniques.

Néanmoins il faut que l’utilisateur des cartes se réalise qu’il doit faire un effort pour traduire les unités géologiques en termes d’application technique. Spécifications et restrictions à cet égard pourront être obtenues du livre explicateur qui fait partie de la collection intégrale des cartes.
