Summary

Involvement of the retroperitoneal space in traumatic perforation of the rectum has been discussed. The anatomic limits of the retroperitoneal space are outlined.

Transverse colostomy should be contemplated in all perforating wounds of the rectum. Extraperitoneal drainage of retroperitoneal abscess is stressed.
