A new method of treating lymph node metastasis in potentially curable carcinoma of the large intestine

  • Published:
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum

Summary

Administration of radioactive colloidal gold and 5-fluorouracil directly into regional lymphatic vessels has been studied in experimental animals and utilized as an adjunct to excisional surgery in patients with carcinoma of the large intestine.

In a series of dogs, radioactive colloidal gold was injected directly into the ileocolic lymphatic vessels. Subsequent scintillation scanning of the animals was carried out, and a consistent pattern of radioactivity was found. Well counts and autoradiographs were performed on the organs at autopsy. Maximum radioactivity occurred in the ileocolic and superior thoracic lymph nodes. Doses above the calculated therapeutic range were well tolerated by the dogs.

A clinical trial of the intralymphatic injection of radioactive colloidal gold and 5-fluorouracil as an adjunct to excisional surgery, in potentially curable cases of carcinoma of the colon, has been initiated.
