Lethal hepatic failure in ulcerative colitis

Summary

A case of fatal fatty metamorphosis of the liver in a patient with fulminant ulcerative colitis is presented.

The patient died in hepatic coma with normal serum ammonia. This unusual finding is related to previous colectomy.

The occurrence of liver disease in patients with ulcerative colitis, and the possible factors responsible for these severe histopathologic changes, are discussed.
