Abstract
Poplar, birch, oak and larchwood cut in spring were seasoned in the open. Poplar and birch were chipped after periods of 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 weeks. One part of the chips was artificially dried or extracted with water. The other part was immediately used to produce laboratory boards. The binders used were pure cement or a mixture of cement with condensed silica fume. The bending strength of the boards increased with seasoning time for all woods, but decreased after 32 weeks of seasoning. Artificial drying of chips and addition of condensed silica fume led to higher bending strength values. Poplar, birch and larchwood seasoned for two weeks and oakwood seasoned for two and twelve weeks was used to make boards with different amounts of condensed silica fume (optimum between 25 and 45%). For the usually unsuitable oak and larchwood the addition of silicon provided boards with good strength values. It is assumed that nearly all ligno-cellulosic materials can be used to produce cement-bonded particleboards if condensed silica fume is present.
