Summary
The effect of various amino acids on collagen biosynthesis was studied in organ cultures of chicken embryo tibiae.
Competitive interrelationship between selected amino acids influences independently the uptake of proline and lysine, precursors of hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, respectively, which are the two amino acids characteristics of collagen.
On the basis of these influences, the possibility of biosynthesis of anomalous collagens is stressed. Parallel studies of biosynthesis of hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine are necessary.
