Summary
It is proved by electron microscopic examinations on ultrathin sections of tensionwood tissue from Populus euramericana regenerata that the gelatinous layer (G-layer) of the secondary wall, which is characteristical for tensionwood fibres, has a honeycomb-structure. The G-layer is limited to the cell cavity by a special lamella. Based on the results of the investigations it seems to be possible that the swelling of the G-layer causes a longitudinal shortening of the tensionwood fibre and might thus be the reason for longitudinal tensional strain occuring in the tensionwood tissue. Using other methods further investigations will show the relation between the discovered structure of the tensionwood cell wall and the anomalons shrinking-behaviour of the tensionwood tissue.
