Summary
With the anotransabdominal technic for examining the colon and discovering lesions, the efforts of the surgeon and proctologist can be combined to provide an efficient procedure for removal of colonic polyps situated above the level normally reached by the sigmoidoscope. Advantages of the method are:
Complete and direct visualization of the rectum, sigmoid flexure, descending colon and, on occasions, even the transverse colon.
Elimination of potential complications such as contamination, hemorrhage and leakage associated with multiple colotomy.
Locating lesions that cannot be reached by sigmoidoscopy, by roentgenologic examination of the colon, and by palpation of the colon.
The procedure is not difficult.
When radical surgical procedures are required, they can be performed without delay.
The period of hospitalization is brief.
