Primary fistulectomy for anorectal abscess

Clinical study of 500 cases

  • Published:
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum

Summary and Conclusions

Most abscesses of anorectal origin should be treated by primary fistulectomy at the time of incision and drainage.

There appears to be very limited need for utilizing a seton.

Concomitant removal of other anorectal pathologic conditions is a safe and rewarding procedure.

In this series there was an over-all recurrence rate of 3.4%. There were few complications and good functional results.
