Periodic peritonitis

Analysis of 19 cases

Conclusion

Periodic peritonitis is a digestive disease of acute and chronic types. It should be regarded as a clear and complete entity. The etiology is unknown and different theories are susceptible to various interpretations. It might be due to disturbances of metabolism, to some form of allergy, or a recurrent silent infectious disease of the peritoneum.

As there is no definite and effective therapy, the patient will remain under constant fear of repeated attacks.

Study of the various biologic reactions in the blood during and after attacks, aimed at discovering some unknown factor that might be responsible for the apparent predilection of the disease among Arabs, Armenians and Hebrews, might be rewarding.
