Summary
Fifty patients undergoing anorectal surgery were supervised and instructed in regard to anorectal exercises during the postoperative period and compared to 50 who received the usual postoperative care with no anorectal exercises. Pain, swelling, disability and discomfort generally were less troublesome in those who took anorectal exercises. Narcotics administered for relief of pain, and catheterization were required less frequently in the group which exercised their muscles.
The muscles involved and the method of performing the exercise have been described. The beneficial effects of anorectal exercises are outlined and a plea for their use is made.
