Summary and Conclusions
Various investigators have pointed out the value of establishment and maintenance of aciduric bacterial flora in the colon of patients with pruritus ani. Usually this factor has been employed as an adjunct to other treatment. It is known that malt soup extract enhances the development of aciduric bacteria in the colon. Administration of malt soup extract to unselected patients with pruritis ani is usually followed by disappearance of symptoms in about three days. This may indicate that the cause of the complaint is attacked. In 46 cases of pruritus ani, complete relief from symptoms was experienced in 37 cases, fair results were obtained in four cases and unsatisfactory results in five cases. Adequate treatment of patients with pruritus ani involves: 1. Recognition of anorectal disorders and of coexisting diseases and provision for appropriate treatment. 2. Instruction of patients regarding personal hygiene, care of the anal region, proper diet, the use of laxatives and administration of malt soup extract.
