Summary
Alkaline hydrolyses of wood and lignin preparations were carried out under mild conditions (buffer pH 8.5, 9.5, and 12.0, 1N NaOH; 100°, 130°, 160°, 210°C; 1… 72 hrs.). The results of a paper chromatographic test of the low-molecular degradation products indicate the occurrance of the dilignoles guajacylglycerol-β-coniferylether. dehydrodiconiferylacohol and pinoresinol. Upon applying buffer solutions the Hibbert ketones α-hydroxypropiovanillone, guajacylacetone, and vanilloylacetyl were found among the reaction products. By tests with model substances and chromatographical observations of the degradation of lignin at the repeated cooking of wood, indications are obtained with respect to the reactions resulting under the present conditions.
