Summary
The effects of the polyprene carbonic acidsd- andl-citronellic acid,d- andl-dihydrocitronellic acid, geranic acid and tetrahydrogeranic acid as well as the aliphatic carbonic acids (atty acids) caprylic acid and caprinic acid were tested against 10 termite species on treated filter paper. In the respective test arrangement 0.2 mg or less of the polyprene carbonic acids and caprylic acid was sufficient to kill part of the termite species. With caprylic acid the animals were killed most quickly. Kalotermitid species are most resistant: approx. 1–2 mg are required to kill the most resistant species. There are differences in the sequence of the effectiveness of the compounds with regard to the individual termite species. Most of the compounds investigated were more effective than tectoquinone, lapachonone, lapachol and pinosylvin monomethylether; their effects are comparable with those of DDT, but they are markedly lower than the killing action ofy-BHC.
