Abstract
Tannins of spruce, mimosa and radiata pine bark were condensed with formaldehyde. The cation exchange capacity of the unmodified tannin formaldehyde resins is caused by the weak acidic phenolic hydroxyl groups. Stronger acidic cation exchange resins can be obtained by a reaction of tannin resins with monochloroacetic acid. The sulfonation of tannin resins with sulfuric acid, eleum or chloro-sulfonic acid is most powerful. Sulfonated resins are strongly acidie and possess a high cation exchange capacity. Sulfitation as an alternative reaction is less successful.
