Summary
The influence of various basic factors regarding the viscosity and bonding strength of phenol-, melamine and ureaformaldehyde resins was investigated. Summarizing the results revealed some important conclusions contributing considerably to the knowledge of rheologic behaviour of synthetic resins. Remarkable is, that the influence by the aging of the resin improves decisively the bonding strength of an inert glue, while adding, strong acids to the cold curing synthetic resin causes an remarkable reduction of the bonding strength.
With increasing glue concentration and viscosity the bonding strength as well rises, and the working life decreases. Within a certain range the time of condensation improves adhesion and cohesion. The duration of curing depends on theph value and quantity of the acid added, also affecting the bonding strength. The influence of the filler causes a gradual decrease of the bonding strength. The temperature of the glue should be held as low as possible to extend its working life and to obtain a higher bonding strength. Due to the very complicate chemical reactions, no empiric regularity between the various factors, the bonding strength and viscosity could be ascertained.
