Abstract
Tests with more than 20 colour indicators revealed that bromophenol blue and bromocresol green, which change their colour to yellow within pH 3.0 to 4.6 and 3.8 to 5.4 respectively, are suitable to detect an early growth of fungi in timber. The principle of this method is the pH-alteration of timber due to fungal growth. The method gave positive results with all brown-rot fungi tested (22) and with more than 2/3 of the white-rot fungi tested (25). Wood discolourating fungi do not influence the reaction. Timber species with a very low pH value, such as Oregon pine, show a colour reaction which is not related to fungal attack. The colour reaction tested here is, in general, very sensitive; it indicates fungal attack even before a deterioration of the timber becomes visible, though no assessment of the potential loss of strength is possible.
