Summary
The growth of blue stain fungi was investigated in naturally blue-stained pine and spruce sapwood as well as in pine sapwood artificially infected with Ophiostoma coeruleum and Ophiostoma piceae.
The hyphae growing in the longitudinal tracheids cause no visible changes of the cell walls. The bordered pits neither influence the direction of growth nor stimulate the hyphe a to enter the pits.
The hyphae growing through the bordered pits first enter through the open porus and then without being constricted, break through the torus located on the opposite side or else penetrate the pit wall with fine bore hyphae. A passage through the perforated outer part of the pit membrane could not be observed. The bore holes showed no evidence of cell walldissolving enzymes.
Hyphae crossing through the tracheid walls form an appressorium, from which a fine bore hypha, with a particularly shaped headpart, is mechanically pressed through the wall by intercalar growth.
The spreading of the hyphae in the wood rays mostly occurs through the pits which apparently are pierced mechanically. Some evidence of enzymatic changes of the cell wall structure was observed on the pit fields of pine. Inside the ray cell walls also some hyphae were found.
