Abstract

Freshwater samples collected from the respective type localities ofPlanctomyces bekefii Gimesi 1924 (a pond in Budapest, Hungary) and ofBlastocaulis sphaerica Henrici and Johnson 1935 (Lake Alexander, Minnesota) provided material which coincuded with the ancient descriptions of these two aquatic microorganisms. AlthoughPlanctomyces bekefii was originally described as a fungus, both organisms are seen by transmission electron microscopy to be budding and nonprosthecately appendaged prokaryotes. Moreover, both are identical, insofar as identity can be demonstrated for such presently noncultivable bacteria solely by microscopic observations. This organism is widely distributed; populations occurring in aritificial ponds in Tempe, Arizona, provide—more conveniently for us than the materials from Hungary and Minnesota—samples for our further study, including attempts at isolation.
