Summary
During a 1 year period 444 patients who had undergone general surgery were documented prospectively in order to figure out the incidence and risk factors of postoperative woundinfection. The highest incidence with 13.7% was found in gastrointestinal operations followed by abdominal operations without opening the gastro-intestinal tract, with 7.4%. Breast-, struma- and hernia operations showed the lowest incidence of wound infection rate with 1.8%. The overall wound infection rate was 6.3%. 6 risk factors influenced the wound infection significantly in an univariate (X2-test) analysis. In the multivariate analysis only the differention into 3 different operation groups showed a significant level (p<0.001).
