Summary
Evaluation of results with staplers in thoracic and abdominal surgery show that the instruments are at least as safe as handsutures. Their advantage lies in considerable time saving and in thin anastomotic lines without bulk. The EEA stapler furthermore permits lower rectal anastomoses than can be done by handsutures.
