Summary
A decreased cerebral blood flow was produced on 8 anesthetized dogs by reducing the blood supply from the extracranial arteries. Under these conditions the effects of hypercapnia, increased systemic blood pressure and combination of both were studied.
It could be demonstrated that with all three methods a sufficient improvement in cerebral blood flow may be obtained.
Contrary to other authors, no correlation between the increase in systemic blood pressure and cerebral perfusion during hypercapnia was found. It is concluded, that improvement of cerebral blood flow during hypercapnia cannot be estimated by changes of blood pressure.
Therefore application of vasopressor drugs for elevation of insufficiently elevated blood pressure during hypercapnia, is not necessary.
