Summary
510 cases operated for colorectal carcinoma are reported. In 46 of these cases (=9%) a hernia or a hernia already operated within the last four years was found. This is a frequency approximately 5 to 10 times higher than in a normal population of the same age group. From this group 75% were men, 80% of which were over 60 years of age. 85% of the carcinoma could be detected by means of combined digital and rectosigmoideoscopic examination. Therefore all male patients more than 55 years old with hernias should be examined in order to attempt earlier detection of colorectal carcinoma.
