Abstract
El Chichonal Volcano, within the Sierra of Chiapas (Mexico), became active on March 28, 1982. The summit dome was blasted away, leaving a 1000 m wide and 290 m deep crater in its place.
Plinian eruption of March 28–29 produced air fall deposits. More vigorous activity on April 3–4 produced air falls, surges and pyroclastic flows. Villages within 6 km radius were entirely destroyed.
The explosive eruptions of Chichonal produced large amounts of K-rich andesitic ash and pumice. The juvenile magma shows little compositional variability. Much of eruptive products is highly porphyritic pumice containing andesine, hornblende, clinopyroxene, biotite and anhydrite phenocrysts.
Résumé
Le volcan Chiconal, situé dans la Sierra du Chiapas (Mexique) est entré en éruption le 28 mars 1982, pulvérisant le dôme somital et laissant à sa place un cratère de 1000 m de diamètre et 290 m de profondeur.
L’éruption plinienne du 28–29 mars a donné lieu à des dépôts aériens. Une activité plus forte, les 3 et 4 avril est à l’origine de produits de retombées aériennes, de déferlantes et de coulées pyroclastiques. Tous les villages situés dans un rayon de 6 km ont été entièrement détruits.
L’activité explosive du Chichonal a produit une grande quantité de cendres et de ponces andésitiques riches en potassium. La composition du magma juvénile varie très peu. Les ponces, très porphyriques, contiennent de l’andésine, de la hornblende, un clinopyroxène, de la biotite et de l’anhydrite en phénocristaux.
