The growth of the Moroto volcano, eastern Uganda

Abstract

The Moroto volcano is one of the mid-Tertiary alkaline igneous centres of eastern Uganda. Five major phases of extrusive, and one phase of mainly intrusive, activity have been recognized in the volcano.

Although a great variety of extrusive rocks occurs, all types are represented in each phase and it is impossible to deduce their petrogenetic relationships directly from the eruptive sequence.

The vulcanicity at the Moroto centre was not markedly explosive, unlike the other great volcanoes of eastern Uganda, and it is suggested that this can be correlated with the relative scarcity of extremely undersaturated material.
