Abstract

The planning system in England and Wales, the scale of the aggregates industry, and problems due to high levels of demand for aggregates are briefly outlined. A planning policy initiative to solve the problems is described. The information base required for preparation of these Guidelines for Aggregates Provision in England and Wales, and the scope of research commissioned by the Department of the Environment in support of work on aggregates policy are reviewed.
