Summary
The experience from more than 60 tunnels excavated by tunnelling machines in Switzerland proves that in several cases the limits for an economic application of these machines have been exceeded. Not only the boreability of the rock restricts the fully mecanised excavation, an excessive abrasivity, an insufficient bracing of the machine, reduced stability or deformation of the rock mass may complicate or prevent the application of a tunnelling machine.
By virtue of the rock properties alone one cannot decide whether in principle the mechanised excavation method is suitable or not, because the construction of the machine should also be known. During the early stage of a tunnel project one can therefore not settle upon the excavation method, considering only the geological records. However, the geologist has to prepare sufficiently detailed documents so that the owner as well as the contractor are able to evaluate the limits for the application of a specified tunnelling machine.
