Summary

Rational development of sea coasts and the continental shelf presents a major problem of nature-protection within the zone of a sea basin in conjunction with the sea coast. Investigations have proved that engineering geological conditions of the Caucasian Black Sea-coast, recent geological processes and, therefore, measures of coast stabilization are predetermined by the latest geological history and neotectonics, hydrodynamics and lithodynamics, submarine canyons, and man's engineering activity. Engineering geological conditions of the Black Sea shelf within the Caucasus boundaries are controlled by Quaternary neotectonic development of the framing structures of the Great Caucasus Southern Slope, the Kolkhety depression and the mountain-folded structure of the Minor Caucasus. Processes of current lithodynamics are largely dependent on longshore detrital flows. The major part of the latter, of great competence, augment the littoral regions including the shelf, thus providing for stability of extensive coastal areas. The remaining part is interrupted by natural (zones of abrasive anticlines) and artificial (harbours, submarine works) structures, passes out into deeper water and into the submarine canyons, thus causing a detritus deficit and waste of valuable seaside areas. Engineering geological investigations during the last decade have enabled the main recommendations aimed at stabilization of the Caucasian Black-Sea-side to be made.
